A great opportunity for back-to-school clothes shopping, Tax-Free Weekend is something that many parents look forward to as a chance to save even more on those back-to-school sales that are already in full swing.
Tax-free weekend is the first full weekend in August, which means because August started on a Saturday this year, that it got moved to the following weekend, August 7th – 9th.
What’s eligible?
Clothing and most shoes under $100 are eligible. According to oklahoma.gov, “clothing” means all human wearing apparel suitable for general use. The website has a “nonexclusive list” of what’s eligible, including:
- Aprons, household and shop
- Athletic supporters
- Baby receiving blankets
- Bathing suits and caps
- Beach capes and coats
- Belts and suspenders
- Boots
- Coats and jackets
- Costumes
- Diapers, children and adult, including disposable diapers
- Earmuffs
- Footlets
- Formal wear
- Garters and garter belts
- Girdles
- Gloves and mittens for general use
- Hats and caps
- Hosiery
- Insoles for shoes
- Lab coats
- Neckties
- Overshoes
- Pantyhose
- Rainwear
- Rubber pants
- Sandals
- Scarves
- Shoes and shoelaces
- Slippers
- Sneakers
- Socks and stockings
- Steel toed shoes
- Underwear
- Uniforms, athletic and non-athletic
- Wedding apparel
What’s not eligible?
According to this flyer for the sales tax holiday, the tax-free weekend “does not apply to the sale of any accessories, special clothing or footwear primarily designed for athletic activity or protective use that is not normally worn except when used for athletic activity or protective use, or to the rental of clothing or footwear.”
Where can I shop locally to buy items tax-free?
We did some digging, and we found a handful of local clothing boutiques that are going to be ready to save you some money, come Friday.
The Native Gypsy
110 E Dewey Ave
The Native Gypsy started as a pop-up at the Route 66 Christmas Chute before planting roots in Sapulpa and bringing its youthful charm to downtown’s shopping scene. They just announced a new licensing deal with the mega-popular Lulu Mac.
The Shack
124 E Dewey Ave
A relatively new addition to the downtown shopping scene, The Shack has some great options for fall, particularly if you’re looking for embroidery.
Merle Norman Cosmetics & Boutique
200 E Dewey Ave
Merle Norman is downtown’s longest-running boutique (opened in 1983!) and has become a reliable source for much more than it’s namesake makeup.
Isabella’s Collection and Birch & Bloom
201 E Dewey Ave
Great for tees and spirit wear for virtually every local school in the area, as well as tees celebrating Sapulpa and the Mother Road. Birch & Bloom carries some great home decor, but aren’t eligible for tax-free weekend.
The Route Cellar
215 E Dewey Ave
The Route Cellar opened earlier this year and quickly gained notoriety as the state’s largest “Made In Oklahoma” (MIO) store, but a healthy portion of the store is dedicated to quality clothing, including tees and sweatshirts with sassy slogans and more.
