What to know for Sapulpa’s Christmas Parade, and what else is happening this weekend in Sapulpa

The Sapulpa Christmas Parade is making its annual return on Saturday evening, and if it’s anything like last year, it’s sure to be a big hit, and it’s a good idea to get prepared now if you’re planning to be at the Route 66 Christmas Chute during the parade. Here are the most important points about this year’s Christmas Parade:

Kids bump fists with workers at the Sapulpa Christmas parade in 2023.

According to the City of Sapulpa, South Hickory Street from Taft to Mary Lynn Street will be closed for parade participants only starting at 4:30 pm.

The parade starts at 6:00 pm. The streets will close by 5:30 pm, and barricades will be strategically placed to prevent pedestrians from crossing the streets except at certain intervals.

The Wimpy’s blimp was a new attraction at the 2023 Christmas Parade, among several.

The parade will keep to the same route. Although there have been discussions about moving the route of the parade in order to accommodate the influx of traffic on Taft Avenue and Main Street, a consensus has yet to be reached by the officials in charge of the event, so the parade will adhere to the same route it’s followed for years: beginning at the corner of Hickory Taft, traveling east on Taft to Main Street, then north on Main Street to Dewey Avenue (Route 66) and traveling directly down the Christmas Chute.

According to the Sapulpa Chamber of Commerce, which handles the event logistics, close to 80 floats are expected. In order to help prevent long stretches of inactivity in the parade, Chamber officials say they’ll actually bring the parade to a stop on Main Street at Dewey in order to let all the floats catch up, at which point they’ll make that turn east onto Dewey to parade down the Route 66 Christmas Chute.

The title of the parade this year is “A Christmas Parade”—a funny take on the title of the hit Christmas movie, “A Christmas Story.” The theme being Christmas movies, with the hopes that we’ll see a lot of floats representing our favorite Christmas movies.

The parade is a huge event for Sapulpa, and last year, a reported 30,000+ attendees from all over were in town just for the Christmas parade. Parade officials say they expect a similar crowd this year, especially given that the weather will be clear and in the upper to mid-50s at the time of the parade.
