Two people were killed after a truck hauling horses crashed into a parked semi trailer on the Turner Turnpike Wednesday afternoon.
Oklahoma Highway Patrol has confirmed that 52-year-old Jamie Earp and 22-year-old Tucker Earp, of Jay, were killed in the crash, which happened about 1:30pm near mile market 209, west of the Sapulpa exit.
While the cause of the crash has not yet been released, witnesses and news reports state that the Earps were traveling eastbound on Wednesday afternoon and for an unknown reason crashed into the trailer of a semi parked on the shoulder.
The crash ignited a fire that consumed both vehicles and caused an hours-long delay for eastbound traffic on the turnpike. One couple who spoke with Sapulpa Times said they were in traffic for about two hours.
After about six hours, two eastbound lanes on turnpike were open, while the third was closed to continue the investigation into Wednesday evening, according to the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority.
A person who told news outlets he was the first on the scene was able to get the two horses in the trailer out and to safety before the fire spread. The horses were reportedly unharmed except for some minor cuts and bruises, and have been returned to the family that owned them.
