Two dead, 12 counties in “state of emergency” after Saturday storms; Sapulpa unaffected

A swath of storms that made their way through the state on Saturday night and into Sunday morning have left at least two dead, including a four-month-old baby, according to news reports.

Multiple tornados were reported, including a fatal tornado near Holdenville in Hughes County. Hughes County EMS reported two fatalities, one 4-month-old child and one adult, as well as several injuries.

The City of Sulfur also suffered heavy damage, and officials are saying at least 20 were injured in a tornado that hit the town on Saturday.

Governor Stitt has declared a state of emergency for twelve counties in Oklahoma after Saturday’s storms. Stitt released a statement early Sunday about the fatalities and damage caused by the storm. “My prayers are with those who lost loved ones as tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma last night,” he said.

Sapulpa was largely unaffected by the storms, although tornado sirens went off at least two separate times near midnight after a tornado warning was issued near the town of Mounds. A confirmed tornado touchdown was not made for that warning, however.

OG&E was reporting that at least 28,000 are without power in its coverage area, down from it’s peak of 48,000 during the height of the storm. They currently have more than 700 restoration personnel working to restore power to the affected areas.
