October 28, 2015 Once again your Sapulpa Chieftain Instrumental Music Program Marching Band brings home serious hardware and serious pride. After practicing two and a half hours in the rain Wednesday morning they loaded the buses wet and tired but by the time they unloaded in Broken Arrow they were pumped and ready to take the field. The sun came out and so did the Chieftains! Every student in place, every note and step memorized to perfection, flags and rifles dried and ready to fly, the band put on a performance that was top notch.

The Oklahoma Secondary School Athletic Association Eastern Regional Marching Competition is not one where bands compete against each other, but where they compete for adjudicated scores. Judged by university professors from across the state, this competition is the first of several OSSAA events the band will participate in this year. There isn’t one judge for each category but 3 judges judge the entire show and assign ratings from 1 to 5, with 1 being a Superior. Sapulpa received Straight 1s from all 3 judges in each category, marching, playing, and visual performance. Following today’s Superior Rating the Chieftain band is set to compete for the coveted Accent Award which is earned by only the finest of music programs who compete in wind ensemble and jazz band categories as well as marching. Sapulpa was one of 3 schools in the state to earn the Accent Award in 2014.

The Sapulpa Instrumental Music Program has a strong history of excellence and looks forward to a strong future building young musicians and guard members into tomorrow’s leaders. Your last chance to see this award winning marching show will be Friday night at Collins Stadium. The band will compete for the last time this season on Saturday in Edmond at the Oklahoma Band Masters Association Marching Competition.
