Wednesday, September 29, 1976, Sapulpa Daily Herald: ‘Wreck Victims’ Treated

“The dozen injured school bus riders withered in pain as ambulance attendants loaded them up for the short drive to Bartlett Memorial Medical Center Tuesday evening. But the injuries weren’t real, and all the students walked away from the Civil Defense Drill at the hospital…The ‘injured’ students, all members of the National Honor Society at Sapulpa High School, were to have been ‘victims’ of a school bus accident on Highway 117. Sheriff’s deputies aided in the drill with communications. Hospital personnel diagnosed and ‘treated’ the 12 as they were brought in from the high school. The test was designed to see how the hospital and law enforcement units might function under a similar situation…Realistic plastic ‘injuries’ were supplied by the State Health Department, and high school teachers added macabre make-up for the test. Owen Funeral Home and Smith Funeral Home provided the ambulance service…”

Sunday, September 29, 1985, Sapulpa Daily Herald: Couple Lives Through Quake in Mexico Hotel

“Many Oklahomans recognize the loud roaring of a tornado.but few have ever heard the sound coming from underground. Mary Ridion has and she is glad to be alive. Ridion is owner and operator of International Tours of Sapulpa and was in Ixtapa, Mexico, Sept. 19, when the first of the two earthquakes devastated central Mexico. Ridion and her husband were in Ixtapa for a two-day vacation prior to an International Tours owners meeting when the first quake hit. She was sound asleep at 7:30a.m. when the doors began to rattle, and plaster started falling from the ceiling and walls. Her husband heard the quake and said it sounded like a tornado coming from underground. Mrs. Ridion heard the second earthquake that struck 10 miles away at 7:55p.m. Friday…”

Sunday, September 29, 1991, Sapulpa Daily Herald: Theatre Presents ‘Murder’

“You’ll never be quite sure who’s murdering who at the Howard Johnson’s. Sapulpa Community Theatre brings Ron Clark’s and Sam Bobrick’s popular farce to town for two weekends. ‘Murder at the Howard Johnson’s’ is not (as its title might suggest) a murder mystery, according to director Richard Hedgecock. The fast-paced three-act play is an adult comedy involving a husband, his wife, and…their dentist…When Arlen (Jenny Jackson) falls in love with Dr. Mitchell Lovell (Steve James) and her husband Paul (Dennis Young) won’t divorce her, someone ends up dead in ‘Murder,’ mystery-comedy which begins Oct. 4…”

Monday, September 29, 2003, Sapulpa Daily Herald: Trick-or-Treating Downtown All About Fun, Candy

“Anyone who has tried driving down Dewey Ave on any Oct. 31 has undoubtedly noticed thousands of masked super heroes, princesses, and ninjas crowding the streets. This year promises to be no different as downtown merchants once again open their doors and give out treats for Halloween. Tami Fleak, with Sapulpa Main Street, said that any business, community organization, or church wishing to participate in the downtown trick-or-treat should call Sapulpa Main Street. An estimated 5,000 people packed Dewey for a safe alternative to door-to-door trick-or-treating last year, and Fleak said they hope to see more this year…’Families can come down and have fun and not have to worry about traffic, or who is giving out candy. Safety is an important issue to families,’ Fleak said…”
