Friday, November 16, 1923, Sapulpa Herald: He Wanted Ride; Got a Long One

“He asked for a ride and he got it. He found out later that he flagged the wrong car. This was the experience last night of Ed Ballard, Creek County prisoner, who made his escape from road work just north of this city yesterday afternoon. On making his escape from the prisoners camp Ballard started for Drumright. Growing tired of walking he decided about 10 o’clock that he would attempt to secure a ride the remainder of the distance to Drumright. In carrying out his plan he stopped a car and asked for a ride, which Bill Norris, Deputy Sheriff of Drumright, readily granted. Norris had been to Sapulpa on business and was returning to his home when Ballard stopped his car asking for a ride to Drumright. The ride proved to be a longer one than Ballard had contemplated, terminating again at the Creek County jail. Jack Combs made his second escape from the prisoners camp again yesterday. A short time ago Combs escaped from the camp and was apprehended in Drumright and returned to jail. After firing without effect at the fleeing prisoners as they broke camp, the guard reported the escapees to county authorities. This morning those prisoners who had previously escaped or made attempts to escape from road work were shackled. More rigid rules, it was announced this morning, will be enforced at the prisoners camp.”
