SAPULPA, Okla. – Sapulpa Public Schools proudly announces the beginning of a new era for the district, which will culminate in a modern, innovative Sapulpa High School campus in just a few short years.
Sapulpa Public Schools administrators and board members, along with Reed Architecture and Interiors, DLR Group, and Nabholz Construction Corporation, held the official groundbreaking ceremony for the new high school campus Tuesday afternoon.
The first group to turn the soil were the “future graduates” of Sapulpa High School.
The event, at the site of the future campus, marks a milestone for Sapulpa Public Schools’ largest bond package in district history, passed by voters in September of 2023. The bond issue totaled $279 million and includes a number of projects– the most significant being the new 9th through 12th grade high school, which will replace the school which has served the district for more than 60 years.
The new high school building will stand near the same location as the current high school, on the corner of Mission Street and Dewey Avenue, featuring a Main Street concept which will be a highlight on Sapulpa’s Route 66.
“This afternoon we have the privilege to spend a moment to reflect on our past and prepare for our future, and the future is very bright for Sapulpa Public Schools,” said Rob Armstrong, Sapulpa Schools Superintendent. “We are excited about what lies ahead over the next couple of years as we build out this new high school.”
Reed Architecture and Interiors of Sapulpa, with consultation alongside DLR Group of Kansas City, designed the high school facility. Nabholz Construction Corporation of Tulsa will manage the building process. The new Sapulpa High School will include top-tier learning environments reflecting the district’s Educational Pathways program, modern science labs, and efficient support spaces. The project also includes an expansive community plaza and a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Center to showcase Sapulpa students’ fine and performing arts and provide a regional entertainment venue.
“This is a big day for Sapulpa High School and our community,” said Seth Shibley, SHS principal. “This project represents the highest level of commitment that our citizens have placed on the education of our students. Our current building has served us well– since the early 60s. Many great people have walked its halls, but now it’s time to start a new chapter, and I have no doubt the new building will serve our students and our community as well as the old one did.”
SPS Assistant Superintendent Johnny Bilby said he joins others across SPS administration and the Sapulpa community in looking toward the future.
“What a great day to be a Chieftain,” said Mr. Bilby. “This vision has been thought about for many, many years. This is going to be a glorious mess, but I promise you it’s going to be worth it. Our students deserve the very, very best.”
Following remarks at the ceremony, future graduates turned the soil, as well as administrators, board members, architects, construction managers, alumni and former administrators including Dr. Mary Webb, retired district superintendent and Mr. John Cockrum, retired high school principal. The groundbreaking ceremony exemplifies Sapulpa Public Schools’ commitment to advancing student opportunities, innovation, district growth, and community engagement. As construction continues, SPS will provide updates.
