A Sapulpa man was arrested on aggravated DUI charges and leaving the scene of an accident after he struck and injured a 13-year-old girl at an ice cream truck and then sped off.

According to the arrest affidavit, on October 10th, Jason McBride, 48, was caught on camera driving eastbound on West Burnham Avenue at a speed police called “greater than reasonable and prudent for a residential neighborhood.”

McBride failed to slow down while attempting to pass an ice cream truck on the left and struck a 13-year-old girl who was crossing the street at the same time. Police say the security footage shows McBride attempting to come to a screeching stop, but then driving away after striking the victim.

Using a partial license plate number and vehicle description obtained from the victim, police were able to identify the vehicle through the Flock Safety Camera System and broadcast it for other agencies to assist in locating the suspect.

At roughly 6:00 pm that evening, a trooper with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol located the suspect vehicle at a gas station, where McBride was attempting to purchase alcohol. According to the affidavit, McBride was observed to be “unsteady on his feet, with slurred speech and glassy, watery eyes.”

McBride admitted to driving down the street, striking the victim, and driving away, according to the affidavit. He further revealed that he had consumed alcohol about an hour before the incident, but had not consumed any since.

McBride was arrested and booked under the charges mentioned above. He’s due in court on November 12th.
