Remembering Li’l Wimpy’s, while we still can!

The City of Sapulpa has purchased the lot at the corner of Maple and Hobson Streets, including a white cinderblock building that most recently contained Wiley’s Automotive Repair. Before that however, it was the home for “Li’l Wimpy’s,” the restaurant borne out of the famous trolley car diner that became a local icon.

In the story on the original Wimpy’s Diner, which we featured in April, we learned that the owner’s son, Nolan Martin, had opened the restaurant in the late 1970s. Reader Nancy Tift Rardin worked there during high school as a waitress. She recalled that a couple of her favorite teachers came in and as a joke, they left their tips as piles of pennies.

Li’l Wimpy’s closed by 1980, but the cartoons on the wall remain…for now. City officials have not specified what the property will be used for, but they have confirmed that the building will be bulldozed and the land cleared.
