Reed Architecture and Interiors began its internship program early this year with Stella Green, its first Sapulpa High School student intern.
“I wasn’t exactly sure what I would be doing when I got into this, but I like it a lot,” said Green, a senior on track to graduate in May.
“Having no training in this, I wasn’t sure how involved they (the Reed team) would allow me to be in their projects,” she said. “But I’ve been able to do many things in both architecture and interior design, such as adjusting floor plans for clients and putting together presentations of what a building would be like.”
This marks the ninth year Reed Architecture has trained interns. Through its first seven years, Reed selected summer students from Oklahoma State University’s School of Architecture. Last year Reed added one from the University of Oklahoma Gibbs College of Architecture and one through AIA Eastern Oklahoma’s high school internship program.
Green gained her position through personal initiative. Intrigued by last year’s Chieftain Stronger bond proposal, she decided to learn more at a Sapulpa Public Schools information meeting before the August election. Green heard Reed Architecture founder and principal David Reed explain different aspects of that $279.2 million bond package. Her interest spurred Reed to offer Green an internship position she arranged through an SPS program.
“We are grateful to be a partner with Sapulpa High School’s internship program,” said Reed. “Stella is a very smart and inquisitive person.”
Reed’s offer touched upon Green’s family history. Her father Brian builds affordable housing projects through Green Companies Development Group of Inola, OK.
“I’ve been around my dad’s firm all my life, watching him design houses, apartments, and other places,” she said. “I liked the idea of learning more about how buildings are built.”
Green said she enjoyed the Reed Architecture environment.
“The people who work here are really nice and good at teaching me what I’m supposed to be doing,” she said.
This spurred her to consider a future in architecture or interior design.
“I haven’t decided what to do yet,” she said with a smile. “I’ve applied at seven places.”
Reed expects great things from Green, whatever direction she takes.
“It’s a privilege to help students find their pathways to success,” said Reed. “Stella is well on her way to do great things.”
