Overnight food truck fire at Christmas Chute causes minimal damage

A food truck caught fire overnight at the Route 66 Christmas Chute, resulting in the loss of one food truck and some minor damage to the Westfall building at the corner of Park Street and Dewey Avenue.

The fire happened between 5:00 and 5:30am according to reports from Christmas Chute officials. The onsite security had just completed a round of inspection of the property at 5:00am, and by 5:30am, workers at nearby Creek County Ambulance Service on Hobson Avenue spotted the flames and called the fire department.

The blaze destroyed the food truck—which was made from an old school bus and sold items like corn dogs and funnel cakes—but did not cause any damage to either food truck next to it.

The Westfall Building, home to popular boutiques Isabella’s Collection and Little Bit of Country, sustained some heat damage to a canopy, and peeling paint near an entrance. Windows were reportedly knocked out by either the heat or by the water pressure from the fire hoses as firefighters fought to keep the fire contained.

Sapulpa Times spoke with the owners of the food truck, who were present while it was being loaded onto a wrecker to be hauled off. Though they had only been at the Chute since Thursday, they said they had done good business the last two days and that there wasn’t much in the way of inventory in the bus. “We usually buy supplies on a day-by-day basis, and we had a good night last night, so most of it was empty,” they said.

No official cause has been given, but firefighters suspect a fryer as the reason for the fire. Nobody was inside the food truck at the time of the fire.

Chute officials say the fire will not change the hours or accessibility of the Christmas Chute, and that it will remain open from 8am to 10pm through December 31st. See more information at route66christmaschute.com
