Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) is dangerously low on blood and is reaching out to the Sapulpa community for help.
OBI relies on regular donations and blood drives to keep their supply stocked to an adequate level, but the recent bout of cold weather forced the cancellation of numerous appointments and blood drives, leading to an extended period of depleted stock.
“Our donors are true champions, but this winter weather has hit us with a painful one-two punch,” said Dr. John Armitage, president and CEO of Our Blood Institute. “We’re asking everyone who can safely travel to step into the ring and help us fight this shortage. Patients are counting on you.”
The OBI is urging donors to reschedule their appointments now that the warmer weather is returning, but two events happening in Sapulpa may help give the OBI a jump in donations for those wanting to help.
The first is Monday, February 24th at First United Bank from 10:20 am – 2:00 pm. Another blood drive event will be held at Hardy’s Pulse Fitness on Friday, February 28th, 9:00 am – 12:30 pm. The goal for both events is 12 or more donations.

OBI says both platelet and whole blood donors are “urgently needed now more than ever.”
Platelets only have a shelf life of about five days, requiring a constant refilling of the supply for patients battling cancer, undergoing surgery, or facing traumatic injuries.
Whole blood donations are also critical, as winter weather has drastically reduced collections. The need for both donation types never stops, no matter the weather.
As part of their current campaign, OBI is giving away a limited-edition, superhero-themed T-shirt to successful donors.
If you can’t make it to one of these blood drive events, but want to schedule an appointment for another day, you can do so at obi.org or by calling 877-340-8777. Anyone at least 16 years old (with some restrictions) can donate. Visit the website for more information on the requirements.
