The world lost a mentor and an encourager on Monday, March 18, 2019. Mildred Nadine Shaw Spangler, born January 10, 1926, passed from this world to her Heavenly home on that day. She was affectionately known by many as simply Nadine. Nadine was many things to many people, especially in Depew. She was a lunch lady, for Depew Public Schools, who sent food home with children who needed it, making sure to fill their hearts as well as their stomachs. She was also a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and so much more. Nadine would mentor anyone in need, be it a daughter-in-law, son-in-law, child, grandchild, or neighborhood kid who happened to come through her door, without wondering whether they deserved her time and wisdom. She met people at the phase they were at in life and helped however she could, whether it was teaching a daughter-in-law how to properly wring a chicken’s neck… “It’s all in the wrist” she would say, or teaching numerous family members how to get stains out of anything, to loving people and believing in them no matter their circumstances. Being in Nadine’s home, made people feel as though they were at home. She was quick to offer a cup of coffee, a friendly game of dominos, or to show her recent vacation photos. Her warm sense of humor came standard, of course. Nadine was the Spangler family doctor. When any family member was sick, she was always consulted before going to a “real” doctor. She would either advise an old-fashioned remedy or recommend going to the doctor. She was also a babysitter for many of her grandchildren and some of her great-grandchildren. Just the threat of using her flyswatter kept both grandkids and great-grandkids behaving properly. Nadine had an infectious enthusiasm that made people feel loved. She was genuinely excited to talk to anyone, even if a wrong number called her house. Nadine also used her zeal for life to teach people how to be happy no matter their life circumstances. Even more important than the Earthly relationships she formed during her lifetime, Nadine had a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
