Phillip E. Washburn was born Dec 2, 1936 and died Nov 11, 2018 at the age of 81. He is preceded in death by Susie Adkins, Tommy Musick, Mary Alice Moore, Edgar Symonds Washburn III, and Marjorie Washburn.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years Deletta, sons Gregory Washburn and Timothy Washburn, daughter Teresa Witt, son-in-law Lance Witt, daughter-in-law Mary Washburn; grandchildren Tiffany Jones, Malorie McGowen, Kathryn Jones, Erica Martinez, Madeline Witt, Jackson Washburn, Eli Witt; great-grandchildren Wendy McGowen, Ethan Martinez, Lucas Tucker, Patrick McGowen, Savannah Martinez, sisters Barbara Bridges, Mary Erwin, and Delores Musick; cousin and lifelong friend Paul Adkins and wife Annette. Many nephews, nieces and cousins feature prominently in his family tree.

Born in Charleston, West Virginia, Phillip grew up in Orange, Texas. Prodigious in science, chemistry and math, Phillip chose his vocation early: medicine. After graduation from Lutcher Stark High School, Phillip attended Southern Nazarene University where he studied chemistry. While at SNU he enjoyed two major achievements. First, he attained local celebrity by making the country’s highest score in a national chemistry exam. Second, he met Deletta Moseley at the end of his freshman year. They were wed on June 2, 1956.

Phillip graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine in 1966. While in medical school he met Roger Kinney, who became Phillip’s lifelong friend and colleague. Upon completion of their internships, the two friends founded the Family Medical Clinic in Sapulpa, Oklahoma on July 10, 1967. In 2016 Phillip retired from medicine, practicing nearly 50 years.

Phillip recently mourned the loss of his dear friend Roger who died just days before, on October 23, 2018.

Phillip was captain in the Army National Guard, was a member of the Sertoma Club, served on the boards of his church and SNU, and on the admissions board of the University of Oklahoma Medical School. He was also an instrument-rated multi-engine pilot, motorcyclist and avid water skier.

Visitation will be held from 3:30-5:30 pm on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at Smith Funeral Home, 1208 S Main St, Sapulpa, OK. Funeral services will be held at 10 am on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at Sapulpa Church Of The Nazarene, 302 S Elm St, Sapulpa, OK.
