What began as a domestic disturbance on Wednesday afternoon, turned even more ugly when police discovered the man accused of assaulting his girlfriend also pepper-sprayed the employee who tried to help.

23-year-old Keegan Jeffery Powers is facing multiple charges after police say his girlfriend, listed as Heather Moews, accused him of hitting her across the face and head with his fists. Officer Larson of the Sapulpa Police says he saw some bruising and swelling begin to appear on Moews face, and Moews said she thought she might have suffered a chipped tooth as well.

According to the affidavit, when the assault began in the couple’s hotel room, at Motel 6 on Skelly Drive. Upon hearing Moews’ cries for help, motel employee Angela Huffman came to assist, at which point Powers left the room, still shouting.

Huffman told police Powers came back into the room shortly after he left and when he reached her, he sprayed her in the face and eyes with pepper spray. Huffman said that her eyes began to burn and she “began having a hard time breathing.”

Moews had gone downstairs to tell manager Mark Sperry about the attack and when Powers saw the two of them talking and on the phone with Tulsa County Sheriff’s office, he pulled out a pocketknife and began running towards them. Sperry immediately put himself and Moews into the office and locked the door.

Powers grabbed a metal trashcan just outside the lobby and began using it to smash the window of the office where Sperry and Moews were. Just as he succeeded in smashing the glass and was making his way through the window, Tulsa County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and though Powers tried to bolt, he didn’t get far; by the time Sapulpa Police showed up to take custody, Powers was sitting in handcuffs.

In Powers’ backpack police found a a baggie containing a green leafy substance later determined to be marijuana, along with two smoking pipes and a bottle with marijuana residue.

Powers has previous records in Illinois from 2009 and 2015 for similar offenses. He was arrested and charged with domestic abuse burglary and two counts of assault and battery, as well as multiple drug charges.
