Dickens With a Twist or Two: Sapulpa Community Theatre to show comedic spin on beloved “Christmas Carol”

Tickets are now on sale for the Sapulpa Community Theatre’s production of “A Dickens’ Christmas Carol.”

Director Chuck Osuna said this play is a family-friendly comedy about a Dickens Christmas Carol gone wrong. Whatever can go wrong will go wrong.

Written by Mark Landon Smith, the play calls for British-speaking actors who are not very good at their craft, Osuna said.

There are over twenty characters being played by six actors, including Selsdon Piddock (Scrooge) played by Darren Clounts and Bettina Salisbury (The Diva) played by Lori Giles Jackson.

There are many quick changes in this fast-paced show, and actors use different voices for each character. The set is designed to look worn as if it is a traveling show and has been used for many years.

The annual performance starts to go wrong when the leading lady feigns illness in hopes that the show will be canceled, but it’s not. She shows up in the middle of the first act and tries to mess up the performances of her fellow characters.

Osuna said he recently directed another play by this playwright. “He creates these plays for comedy to make it look like the actors have forgotten their lines or their cues,” he said. “A show like this calls for good actors to play bad actors and it can be a challenge for them.”

Performances are on Dec. 2, 3, and 9 at 7:30 p.m. and on Dec. 4, 10, and 11 at 2 p.m. Visit sapulpatheatre.org to reserve your seats.
