The CCSO, along with the Department of Environmental Quality, is partnering with the Electronic Synergy Foundation to provide another “County-Wide Free Dump Day” for Creek County residents who need a place to get rid of their junk.
The Monday before Memorial Day Weekend, Sapulpa was hit with a burst of severe weather that brought straight-line winds that took out trees in a sporadic manner; some streets were fine, and one block over, every tree down the street was down. Meanwhile, the windows at The Way Church were blown out, as well.
The sudden damage to the town was a surprise, and finding out that the city had no plans to provide a drop-off site for debris did not help matters.
A few weeks later, however, the Creek County Sheriff’s Office is stepping in to provide relief to citizens all over the county.
Dean Wise, the Logistics Coordinator for Creek County, told Sapulpa Times over email that the new County-Wide Free Dump Day had actually been planned “before any of the recent events.”
“We will have thirty 30-yard roll-offs (dumpsters) for these items (listed below) … in a separate location on the side of the buildings we will have Electronic Synergy Foundation,” Wise said. ESF was the same partner the CCSO had at the last dump day, which, despite the weather, Wise said was “very successful.”
The last County-Wide Free Dump Day was a soggy one as the area was drenched with part of what would become the wettest April in Oklahoma on record. Still, Wise said ESF was able to collect over 25 tons of E-Waste.
The County-Wide Free Dump Day is made possible by funding from a Department of Environmental Quality grant that Wise has been applying for each year since fiscal year 2021. He said in their first year, the county received $40,000. “All subsequent years we received $30,000,” he said.
A rain-or-shine event, Wise says previous years have “been very successful,” but said the results have varied on the amount of total trash, scrap metal and tires they’ve collected each time. “One event brought in more than 2,500 used tires, two 18-wheeler loads of scrap metal, and 50 fully-loaded roll-offs of various household trash items, including carpet, furniture, mattresses, lawn furniture, etc.”
In addition to the dump events, the grant has also made possible a twice-monthly roadside illegal dump and trash cleanup through a newly implemented Creek County Community Service Program, administered by the Creek County District Courts.
