County to implement new speed limit postings off Hickory, south of town, begins process of selecting a firm for bridge inspections

The Board of County Commissioners of Creek County discussed speed limit changes for certain stretches of roads in and around Sapulpa at its regular meeting on Monday morning.

One section includes Hickory east to South 97th West Avenue along West 161st Street South, which currently has unposted speed limits. District #1 Commissioner New Stephens voiced concerns for the many residential areas off that road. The new posting will be 35 mph.

Going west from Hickory on West 161st Street South for about 2,450 feet, the new posted speed limit will be 25 mph, until the road ends at a turn. This area has a trailer park and other small residential lots with driveways directly off the road, with children playing in their yards, so excessive speeds pose concerns. The new 25 mph speed limit is expected to make that street safer for the families living there.

A mile south on West 171st Street South, from Hickory east to South 97th West Avenue, also has unposted speed limits. The new posting will be 45 mph.

Finally, on South 129th West Avenue south from West 181st Street South to West 186th Street South, on South 113th West Avenue (Hickory) south from West 181st Street South to West 186th Street South, and on West 181st Street South east from 129th West Avenue to 113th West Avenue, the speed limit will go from unposted to 45 mph.

Stephens commented that people probably “go 80 [mph] through there, but the right thing is not always the easy thing.”

The BOCC met an additional two more times throughout the week to conduct conference calls for the elevation process to select three bridge inspection companies from ODOT’s list of approved firms.

Ultimately the Board was able to contact Guy Engineering, Burgess and Niple, Inc., and Garver to discuss their selected questions.

In its regular session on Tuesday, October 12th, the Board will have its score sheet prepared along with a Resolution stating their final selection.
