Been There, Done That: June is a Busy Month

Story by Jon Stalnaker AKA The Studebaker Dude

June is typically a busy month for me but going into June from a stressful May just exacerbated the challenges. It’s all good stuff though. I have an anniversary that falls on my Mother’s birthday, and my birthday is also in June. And don’t forget Father’s Day. Even with the stress of May, that’s not that difficult to deal with, but wait, there’s more. I also took on cataract surgery this year and that, all by itself, is plenty enough. I had both eyes done two weeks apart. There are physical restrictions while my eyes heal, that last 4 weeks for each eye. I can’t put this all behind me until mid-July when we have more plans.

I mentioned last week how wonderful it was to be able to see again, and that was only after one eye surgery. After that, I got the other eye fixed and what a wonderful thing it is to see with such clarity. I used to strain my eyes trying to read the speedometer when I was driving and now I can see it crystal clear. I noticed today that there is a blue ring around the speedometer that I never noticed before. I’ve only been driving our car for about eight years. I knew my eyes were bad, but I didn’t expect it to be so different. I was forewarned, and “Boy-o-Boy”, was everybody oh so right about that.

We love to try new restaurants, especially Japanese cuisine, breakfast, and Pizza. Being out and about with all the Dr. visits, we’ve been having fun exploring. We have favorites already but now that we have explored, we have a couple more favorites. There are still a few that we have run across that we will go back and try; I don’t think it’s possible for me to get tired of sushi, but I can pass on pizza once in a while. I’ve been in love with Japanese food for about 45 years. The first time I tried it, I was smitten by the beautiful presentation of it. It is magnificent art and I love the food too, especially raw fish. Then I fell in love with a half Japanese woman and got to share our home with her Japanese mother for over 20 years. For sure, Japanese food is my all time favorite and I love trying new places and new recipes. There are some things that I will not eat but those items are far fewer than the many culinary jewels that make my taste buds do a happy dance.

Oishi… yet another “new to us” Japanese restaurant. (Provided)

So far I have made it through both surgeries, our anniversary, and Father’s Day. What a terrific time I’ve had, and I thank my wife and daughter for making them special. All that’s left is my birthday and we have made some wonderful plans to revisit one of our favorite restaurants in Tulsa. If you like fancy sushi, Yokozuna is the place to go. They make some fascinating rolls, and the atmosphere is first class. It’s in the shopping center at Yale and 91st. If you love sushi like I love sushi, it’s a must try. I can’t say it’s the best because there are so many that I cannot and will not limit myself to just one or two places.

After my birthday, I plan to take it easy and get my eyes healed and adjusted to seeing the beauty of Green Country in Oklahoma. Everything looks so different and the colors are magnificent. Life is good…
