[VIDEO] World War II veterans remember: Paul Beck was an Army Air Corps firefighter in the Pacific

Beck, 97, talked to the Tulsa World recently about his service as an Army Air Corps firefighter in WWII, helping put out fires and rescue airmen from crashed B-29s.

Now that he was all cleaned and wrapped, Paul Beck couldn’t decide what he was more worried about. His burned body or his wounded dignity.

“I looked just like a mummy. … I couldn’t do anything for myself,” he said.

“I had a slit for my eyes, slit for my mouth, and slit in my backside and around front.”

Still, underneath all those bandages, Beck couldn’t help but feel grateful.

After all, he was alive. The bandages were just there to make sure he stayed that way.
