Ward 1 still undecided; Nicolas and Harris will go to runoff

Ward 1 Seat 1 will go to a runoff in April after Tuesday’s contentious election left no clear winner.

Just three votes made the difference between Incumbent Elizabeth Nicolas and her closest challenger, Mike Harris.

Nicolas, who received 35.92%, or 74 votes, as of Tuesday evening. Nicolas has served as the Councilwoman for Seat 1, Ward 1, since she was appointed chair by the City Council after the resignation of John Suggs three and a half years ago. Nicolas also got the most early votes, with a total of 16.

In a statement to Sapulpa Times, she said she was “honored” by the support.

“I want to thank everyone that came out to vote today,” she said. “I am honored by the support that I have received from the voters of Ward One!”

Harris was the closest challenger, with 34.47% (71 votes). Mull came in third place with 29.61% (61 votes). A total of 206 votes were cast, according to the results posted to the state election website.

Harris expressed his gratitude to the voters after the results were posted on Tuesday evening.

“Thank you, Sapulpa, for voting today,” he said. “Your voice was heard and counted. Let’s go forward to work together in making our great city even better.”

When asked for a statement, Mull’s initial response was, “See you in 2 years, Councilman Molina!”

He quickly followed that up with appreciation for his supporters. “Thanks to all the people (who) put (in) an effort to get out and vote and participate in the city structure! Thank you for your support!”

The runoff for Ward 1 will happen on Tuesday, April 7th, along with the elections for Wards 3 and 5.

In other Creek County election news, a proposition for Depew Public Schools passed 79.81% to 20.19%, and Drumright Public Schools will go to a runoff between Brandy Anny Baugh and Daryn Christy.
