Upcoming seat belt enforcement will focus on teens and their passengers

Teenagers, take note:  Creek County Sheriff’s Office will be running a two-week seat belt enforcement emphasis starting February 26. If you get caught not wearing a seatbelt, you could get a ticket.

In fact, any member of your vehicle not fastened in properly could get a citation as well.

The seat belt enforcement event, which will end on March 9, will target teen drivers and their occupants as an attempt to cut down on the amount of teenagers on the road without proper restraints.

In 2016, 38 teenagers ages 14-19 died in motor vehicle crashes on Oklahoma roads; 21 of the 38 teens—55% of them—were not wearing seat belts.

This is the third year law enforcement agencies in Oklahoma will participate in the OK SAFE seat belt enforcement emphasis. In an effort to increase seat belt compliance, Deputies will be targeting areas around high schools in Creek County.

Fred Clark of Creek County Sheriff’s Office says that over they years they have learned that nothing impacts human behavior more than vigorous enforcement.

“We have also learned that warnings have little or no impact on compliance.” he said.
