Tulsa Public Schools will close Monday, Sapulpa not sure yet; teacher walkout still possible

About 3pm this afternoon, Tulsa Public Schools confirmed that they would be closed on Monday, April 2nd as teachers decided to participate in a walkout for teacher raises.

An announcement to TPD school district said that all school buildings would be closed to the public and that students or families would not be able to access the buildings.

The news comes even though the State Senate and House passed HB1010XX, which raises the taxes and revenue enough to give each teacher in the state an average of a $6.1K raise and increase their average annual salary to about $51,400.

Tulsa World is reporting that the increase in salary would take Oklahoma from 49th in the nation to 28th in the nation in terms of Teacher pay—assuming that the rest of the states stay the same.

At least two other states have already agreed to significantly raise teacher pay, so the jump in comparative pay in the nation may not be as big as initially thought.

Sapulpa Superintendent Rob Armstrong met with teachers in the district to find out if they still intended to have the walkout. When reached for confirmation, he said that the district was continuing to survey the the teachers tonight and would have an answer by Friday afternoon.
