What it’s like being a Sapulpa Times intern
Over the years, we’ve had a couple of occasions to add interns to the workforce at Sapulpa Times. It’s always a great experience, not just to get the help with producing content, but I thoroughly enjoy showing the experience of being a local news reporter to the younger generation. In my mind, these are the folks who will keep publications like ours going after I’m gone.
In January, we had Riley Rinehart from Cascia Hall join us for a few weeks as I showed her the ropes. She describes her experience below:
I had an amazing experience at the Sapulpa Times. I was welcomed with open arms by Micah and immediately felt at home. I was able to publish multiple stories and learn about the techniques and styles of journalism. Micah was incredibly thoughtful and helped explain things to me while also ensuring I was learning. He has helped me improve my speaking and learning skills, as I feel much more comfortable now making simple phone calls to people I don’t know and conducting interviews. I learned how to write a crime story, conduct an interview, and operate the Sapulpa Times website. I also attended a city council meeting and numerous other meetings. I’ve learned so much about the city of Sapulpa and met countless people. The people I have worked with have been so kind, compassionate, and welcoming. I’ve worked with Micah to provide the city with a reliable source of information while also getting to know the town. I’ve seen what it takes to be a journalist and to run a newspaper, and Micah portrays these skills in an exemplary way. The amount of thought and care that goes into each one of his stories is astonishing. I am sad that my time at Sapulpa Times has come to an end, but I am so grateful for the opportunity I have had.
Riley was a joy to work with, and we had a great time! We did manage to catch one selfie at the new 74066 photo-op at Herald Square while it was under construction:
