Sunday Timeloop: Fall break, what’s coming up and Sapulpa’s “Preposterous” bombing

Good morning! Welcome to the Sunday Timeloop, the subscribers-only newsletter that catches you up on what you might’ve missed from the town that we love. Let’s dig in!

If you only read one story this weekend:

I’m not at all surprised by the number of people who don’t know who Max Meyer was. The man was, by the best account we have, so much larger than life that if someone told you about him you’d be asking yourself if he was real or some hero of local folklore like Pecos Bill or Paul Bunyan. Meyer was full of entrepreneurial spirit, and the very definition of “eccentric rich personality.” He came to Sapulpa as a retailer to a dusty but growing town right as the oil boom hit, and he became a millionaire. Naturally, he used his wealth in odd ways, such as building his own island in a lake on his property off Route 66 between Sapulpa and Kellyville. His story is wonderfully told by his son in his book “Preposterous Papa,” which, when it was released, was every bit the imaginative escapade the man embodied.

What else you might’ve missed this week:

It was fall break this week and while the kids were out of school, the events were in full force, including the annual STEAMcon at the Sapulpa Public Library and the Sapulpa Historical Society Open House, featuring a walking tour of all the local film locations for Rumble Fish, just in time for the 40th anniversary of the arthouse film directed by Francis Ford Coppola. If you missed out, be sure to watch Timeloop Live, the Facebook Live show I shoot with my cohost Lucy Lawson three times a week—it’ll keep you in the loop!

What to know for the upcoming week:

  • Route 66 (Dewey Ave) will be closing from Main Street to Elm Street in order to set up for Sapulpa’s Route 66 Christmas Chute! That portion of Route 66 will remain closed for at least the remainder of the year, and maybe longer, depending on when the city begins the construction of the new Dewey Streetscape redesign, which is slated to begin in January.
  • Let Halloween have its moment—we know we get into the holidays earlier than ever these days, but Sapulpa has several great options for Halloween coming up, including the Sapulpa Cruise Night Trunk or Treat at the Creek County Fairgrounds and the popular Sapulpa Parks Spooktacular, which will include a “Sensory Hour” from 5-6pm. More information on that here.
  • Registrations for the Jingle Bells Sweepstakes and the Sapulpa Christmas Parade are both underway. If your business would like to participate in Jingle Bells, be sure to reach out to Sapulpa Main Street. If you want to sign up to be a float in the parade, contact the Sapulpa Chamber of Commerce.
