Sugar Llama’s abruptly closes its doors in Sapulpa

Sugar Llama’s, the gourmet mini donuts and dessert restaurant in downtown Sapulpa closed their doors for good and without warning on Thursday evening, Sapulpa Times has learned.

According to a statement on their Facebook Page, the store owners Chad and Dea O’Roark said that they didn’t intend for such an abrupt closure of the store. “We have poured our hearts and souls, blood, sweat, and tears into this store, and that is literally the truth,” they said.

Sugar Llama’s opened in April of 2023, a brand new business in a part of downtown Sapulpa that was only just starting to see a bit of renovation, beginning with the rehabilitation of the Boone Insurance building. Owner Will Berry said at the time that he wanted a unique business in the location, and welcomed Sugar Llamas as the first tenant after the renovations were complete.

The dessert cafe found quick success upon opening and had a successful 2023 at the Route 66 Christmas Chute, but construction projects on Hobson Street, combined with a change in the traffic flow for the 2024 Christmas Chute appeared to take a toll on the business, leading to their closure.

O’Roark says that gift cards will still be honored at any other Sugar Llama’s location, and the special coupons can be redeemed at the 101st and Mingo location in South Tulsa. He also stated that “all employees will be paid in full,” and they are working to transfer some employees to other locations where possible.

He says that he’s happy to talk with anyone who has questions about the decision. “please give me a call and I will be happy to explain the decision. I assure you it was a not a rash one, and was done with family, employees and our wonderful customers, with whom many of of we have become friends, and of course, with the City of Sapulpa in mind.”

Overall, O’Roark said he wished they were able to have the sales to stay. “Please, please please shop local and help these other local individuals’ businesses thrive,” he said.
