Friday, October 28, 1932, Sapulpa Free Press: Refinery Shuts Doors in Move to Cut Expense

“Temporary shut-down of the Continental Refinery, ordered last week caused considerable gloom in Sapulpa for a few hours, before a meeting was held at the Chamber of Commerce when H.G. Osborne, company official, explained that the shutdown was only temporary. Some 50 families are affected directly by the change, although Mr. Osborne stated that none of the employees would lose their jobs, but would be taken care of in other plants, possibly Ponca City…Mr. Osborne stated that he had advised employees to not dispose of their homes in Sapulpa, as he felt sure the move was only temporary. The shut down makes some difference to local business, especially with some families moving away. It costs the city water department around $400 per month, as the refinery has been using about that much water each month.”
