Wednesday, October 19, 1949, Sapulpa Daily Herald: Odd Fellows Here to Join Drive to Buy Iron Lung
“Sapulpa Odd Fellows will join other IOOF lodges in this district in sponsoring a drive to purchase an iron lung. The lung will cost approximately $3,000 with Sapulpa’s quota set at $350. Participating lodges are those in Tulsa County, Sapulpa, Mounds, Coweta, and Wagoner…Many individuals and concerns have already contributed to the drive, which has been approved by the local Chamber of Commerce and City Manager…When the lung is purchased, lodge member said it will be placed in Hillcrest Hospital, Tulsa, with the understanding that it is to be moved when needed elsewhere. There is no charge for the use of an iron lung to polio patients, a flat charge being made for polio patients and paid by the foundation or the individual depending upon the financial circumstances of the patient…”

“Open House for the Sapulpa Handicapped Opportunity Workshop (SHOW) is scheduled Sunday…Betty Maple, supervisor, said the public is invited to see a display of work the facility has produced and to see some of the workers on the job. Staff members will answer questions and take offers for any other contract work for the center. SHOW has eight workers, engaged in various types of packaging for area firms…”

“Nine-year-old Jason Mikles of Sapulpa brought home Reserve Champion Honors from the Tulsa State Fair in the Pinto Pony Competition. Jason and his pony, J’s Sparky Spots, also placed in the walk-trot competition at the fair. During the recent Creek County Fair, Jason and his pony won three first place awards, one second place, and two third places. He is the son of Joe and Terry Mikles and is a fourth grade student at Washington School.”

“The Kellyville High School Band will host its annual Halloween Carnival Oct. 23 in the old gym. Games, prizes, and other activities are planned. Children may wear costumes. Candy will be distributed, and hot dogs, nachos, pickles, and pop will be available. Tickets for games are 25 cents. The public is invited.”
