Wednesday, November 28, 1923, Sapulpa Herald: Jones’ Eleven is Ready to Play Kansans
“Undefeated Elk City Club expected to give Sapulpa a battle. Coach Virgil Jones’ Blue and white gridsters will compete with the Elk City aggregation tomorrow afternoon at League Park at 3 o’clock for gridiron titles. The visitors from Kansas have been carrying away all honors in their section of the state, and have piled up a score of 206 points against their opponents, and only five scored against them. Caney, Kansas is the only team to score against the northern team, making the only 5 points off them during the entire season…Additional bleachers have been arranged for at the game tomorrow to accommodate one of the largest crowds of the year. This morning at the high school, pep clubs were busily engaged, stirring up the spirit of the students, and planning their stunts for the game. The Elk City squad will arrive in town tomorrow morning, by the Frisco at 1 o’clock, where they will be met by a large number of Sapulpa fans.”

“It’s time to start planning your outdoor Christmas decorations again, and the Herald announces today its fifth annual lighting contest with a total of $70 in prizes to be given away. For the past four years, the Herald has sponsored a Christmas Outdoor Home Lighting contest as an added impetus to Sapulpans to beautify their homes in keeping with the holiday mood…In the first division, which is for the entire home, prizes will be $25 for first place…In the second division for home window displays only, first prize will be $5…”

“…The Tulsa ABA Nationals are held annually at the fairgrounds. One of those riding-racing this weekend was 16-year-old Sapulpan Shane Paul Vincnent. Vincent is a team member of the eight man staffed factory sponsored Team Powerlite. The Powerlite team is a bicycle factory sponsored group who came into the Tulsa Nationals with the number one team ranking…Vincent’s ultimate goal is to turn pro around age 20, but first the Sapulpan has his eye set on the Amateur class title…Vincent also talks of a desire to return to public school next year as a junior, specifically to try out for the Chieftain football team…Shane Vincent astrides his Powerlite Coqpit racing bike. The 16-year-old Sapulpa homeschooler races with the No. 1 ranked team in the American Bicycling Association ranks. Vincent’s team retained their factory title, and the bike model he rides was voted ‘bike of the year’ by BMX’ers running the Tulsa Nationals this past weekend…”
