Saturday, August 17, 1946, Sapulpa Herald:

Local Officer is Joined by Bride in Japan

“According to a recent United Press dispatch from Yokohama, Mrs. Gordon H. Shumard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.R. Ledbetter of Oklahoma City, arrived in Japan Aug. 10 aboard the liner Monterey to join her husband, Second Lt. Gordon H. Shumard, formerly of Sapulpa. The Shumard’s were married by mail while Lt. Shumard was stationed in Manila last January and the former Sapulpan waited seven months for his bride to join him…The liner Monterey was said to have carried the largest shipload of occupation personnel dependents yet to the land in Yokohama.”

Work Begins on Safeway Building Site

“Work has started on the proposed Safeway building in the 600 block on South Main Street. The project has been back and forth between the city commission, planning commission, and Bristow superior Court for the past several months…The original plans for the project called for competition within 150 calendar days, and the building will contain some 35,000 square feet. Safeway officials previously announced the new portion to be occupied by their firm would call for at least a fifty percent increase in the number of persons employed locally…The store will be of the new ‘satellite’ type which the company is building in metro areas. It will contain all sporting goods, appliances, and hard lines found in the Sears line. No furniture or clothing will be included. A service area for sale of automobile items will be included. The Sears store will employ 30 or more persons…”

Summer Reading Takes Magical Turn

“Young people in Kellyville enjoy activities at the Kellyville Public Library, during the library’s summer reading program. ‘A Magical Madcap Tour’ was a six-week program. The program averaged 70 younger students and 15 older students per week. The program included tortilla-making and information about Mexico with Hilda Guerrow, and information about Switzerland with Nicole Young, Scotland with Debbie Ponder, and a bagpipe mini-concert by Dudley McCubbin, and Morocco with Badia Edmiston. Crafts centered on the country of the day, and parents chipped in to help. In addition, children who read their goal of books received coupons for pizza from Simple Simon’s of Kellyville.”

City Council Members Approve Bridge Replacement

“Sapulpa City Council members approved an emergency expenditure of $39,239 to replace a bridge on West 91st Street…In last week’s meeting, City Manager Tom DeArman told council members the bridge was vital to keeping 91st Street open because of school buses traveling to and from Freedom Elementary School and having a path for emergency vehicles. The bridge is expected to be complete by Sept. 1…The council also approved the closing of portions of Dewey Avenue for the annual BIOS Run for a Better Life event scheduled Aug. 28…Council members approved annexation of a strip of Hwy 66 north from the current city limits to just north of the Hwy 66 and South 56th West Avenue intersection…”
