Tuesday, March 10, 1931, Sapulpa Herald: Three Killed in Airplane Crash Near Sapulpa

Three people are dead and two others are injured. one perhaps fatally, as the result of an airplane crash near Mounds this morning. The dead are: Mrs. Edith Reed, 50; David Reed, 17 and Herschel Casey, 16, all of Mounds. The injured are: L. D. Reed, 14. Mounds and James Hayes. 20, of Wewoka, pilot of the plane. Reed is more seriously injured than Hayes, hospital attendants here said. The bodies of Mrs. Reed, her son, and young Casey were taken to Mounds. Hayes and the other Reed boy were brought to the hospital here. The plane, a Lincoln Standard bi-plane nosedived from an altitude of about 500 feet, when the motor failed, according to Hayes’ statement. Hayes said that he left Tulsa yesterday. and was forced to land near Mounds. He and a companion, D. C. Dale, of Seminole, spent the night at the home of John Reed, farmer, whose wife and son were killed in the crash this morning. Hayes said that he landed last night because the plane was leaking oil. This morning, he said, be fixed the leak and believed the plane to be running all right when he took the Reeds and the Casey boy up for a flight. Hayes said he had no pilot’s license and was driving an unlicensed plane…”

Thursday, March 10, 1955, Sapulpa Daily Herald: Separate Schools Teachers Meeting Set Tomorrow

“The Northeast District association of separate schools will hold a teachers meeting at Tulsa Friday and schools here will be dismissed on that date. The district comprises 12 counties in the northeastern part of the state. President of the organization is Mrs. Zemula C. Williams of Booker T., secretary is Ruth Devreaux of Booker T., and H. W. Crowell, also of Sapulpa’s Booker T. is treasurer. Theme for the meeting will be, ‘Improving Human Relations Through the Classrooms, Schools and the Community.’ Principal speaker at the general session and banquet Friday night will be Cenoria Johnson of Oklahoma City executive secretary of the state urban league.”

Monday, March 10, 1980, Sapulpa Daily Herald: Radar in Use on City Streets

Sapulpa motorists had better obey speed limits posted on city streets, as new radar devices go into operation today, said Chief of Police H. K. Jones. Chief Jones asked that motorists comply with the posted limits in order to avoid speeding citations. The SPD recently received two new radar units and officers were to be certified today to operate the devices. Jones said ‘Radar Controlled’ warning signs have been put up with the speed limit markers in order to remind motorists that the posted limits will be enforced.”

Friday, March 10, 2006, Sapulpa Daily Herald: Whitehouse Named New CCEM Director

“Danny Whitehouse, a 19-year veteran of the Sapulpa Fire Department, has been named the new director of Creek County Emergency Management. In making the announcement, District No. I Commissioner Dana Hudgins said it was important to have a CCEM director who had the respect of the police and fire departments in the county. Whitehouse, he said, fills those shoes. Whitehouse currently is a captain of the Sapulpa Fire Department and said he was enthusiastic about the job because of the changes in CCEM. especially after 9/11. Hudgins said no one could be expected to fill the shoes of former director B.J. Pope, who died of a heart attack in August 2004. Hudgins said he realized there had been criticism because of the length of time it took to name a new director, but it was more important to put a man in place who could continue the work started by Pope. Pope is credited with taking a discredited CCEM organization and turning it into an organization respected by state and national emergency management agencies…”
