Friday, January 31, 1908, Union News: Big Damage in the Oil Field
“Pole Cat Creek caught fire about eight o’clock last night one mile south of the new bridge and burned north to where it reached the property of the Moss Englert and Chaney Oil Company and did considerable damage. This company lost five thousand barrels of oil, four tanks, one boiler and a rig was damaged to the extent of about one hundred dollars. The fire was a beautiful sight from the city, but dangerous sweeping everything in its path.”

“For Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Smith of 1517 ½ S Main, a dream has come true. After all the entries were in, Ellis Smith was named the first prize winner of the Sapulpa Shopping Carnival ‘Spy the Buys’ contest, and has won for himself and his wife, an expense-free holiday at the swank Riviera Hotel, in Las Vegas, Nevada, via TWA – Trans World airlines. A 19-year-old contest winner is a graduate of Sapulpa High School and he and Mrs. Smith was only recently married. When informed of her husband’s good fortune Mrs. Smith exclaimed…Second prize for the contest went to Mrs. Phyllis Charles, who won a television set, and the third prize of a Hasty-Bake outdoor barbecue, went to Mrs. George Smith, Mrs. Wilford Hatfield, Wanda Yocham, Mrs. Fern Simmons, Mrs. B. Bomgardner, Mrs. Nellie Winters and Miss Ann Simmons…”

“‘There’s raw sewage ankle deep,’ said Mirl Kellog, Jr., 1310 E. Dewey, as he described the condition of his home and the rental unit next door. Saturday morning, the Kelloggs woke to find water gushing onto their bathroom floor. Kellogg said he immediately phoned the city and a worker was sent to his residence. After surveying the situation, the city employee determined he could not handle the problem alone; therefore, he went for assistance…A short time later the two men returned who added after some discussion the workers agreed a backhoe was needed in order to do the necessary work…Kellogg said he carried some insurance, but he doubts it will cover the $900 loss of new carpeting, which the sewage destroyed…”
