Thursday, January 17, 1907, Sapulpa Democrat: Deep Drilling Found Gas…Captured Territory Outlaw

“Tulsa, I.T. – The Laclede Oil and Mining Company of St. Louis, brought in a gas well two miles south of the Glenn Pool at a depth of 1700 feet. This depth is below the Glenn sand hitherto the deepest discovered…Walter Spess and Bill Debolt members of the Spess gang of outlaws, who recently shot up the town of Mannford, were captured by the federal officers late Saturday night, after an exciting chase near there. Deputies will continue the pursuit until all the members of hte gang, Fred, Spess, Gene, and Bill Morris and composed of a dozen others, constitution the last federation of outlawry in Indian Territory has been captured. Manford is located in the wildest part of the Creek Nation and has been the favorite haunt of other outlaw organizations of the early days.”

Friday, January 17, 1930, Sapulpa Herald: High School’s Enrollment Has Hit New Peak

“Enrollment reached a new record at Sapulpa High School this morning with 1165 students registered for the new semester which opens Monday. Final examinations were completed at 11 o’clock and school was dismissed until Monday. Additional students from the ward schools who are expected to enroll Monday, may make the total enrollment of the high school in excess of 1200…”

Sunday, January 17, 1954, Sapulpa Sunday Herald: Oak Ridge Citizens Demand Action on Road Improvement

“A group of citizens in the Oak Ridge district will meet at the Blue Dahlia Mission Jan. 25 to demand action on road improvement for West 61st Street in that area. A spokesman for the group…declared Saturday that repeated demands for road improvement have led to little response…A petition containing 215 signatures, some of Creek County residents, some of Tulsa County citizens (road in question is the dividing line between Tulsa and Creek Counties) had been sent to the state government…”

Tuesday, January 17, 1978, Sapulpa Daily Herald: Sapulpa Judgers Second

“Sapulpa High School’s Future Farmers of America (FFA) livestock judging team was second in the nation at the National Western Stock Show in Denver Saturday, trailing the champion Lakefield, MN, team by only six points. Lakefield successfully defended its grand champion trophy with 1,569 points in beef, swine and sheep judging. Sapulpa had 1,563, far outdistancing the third place team from Garnett, KS, which had 1,480. Blake Stephens of Sapulpa was the top swine judge and second in overall individual competition; HArlan Yocham of Sapulpa was top beef judge. Jerry Lance of Sapulpa was third high individual swine judge, Danny Whitehouse fifth; and Stephens and Lance were fourth and fifth respectively in sheep judging. Members of the Sapulpa Reserve Championship team included Yocham, Stephens, Whitehouse, Hoss Crowl, and Lance, with John Sharber as team coach.”
