Thursday, September 5, 1918, Sapulpa Herald: Eight Women in First Round Up by City Officers

“The limelight was thrown on eight Sapulpa women this morning by the newly created Sapulpa Council of Defense when they were brought before the body to explain how they were getting by. As a result of the first step take in an effort to rid the city of women of ill repute. Wasserman blood tests were ordered taken on three of them, another was ordered to leave the city within 24 hours and four others were able to show that they were leading clean lives. These last four were turned loose immediately…This marks the real beginning of the vigorous crusade to be waged against women who are commercializing themselves and making the community unsafe for their civilians as well as soldiers returning home on furlough or about to enter the military…”

Sunday, September 5, 1948, Sapulpa Herald: Gambling, Liquor Charges are Filed as Result of Raid

“A raid by the County Sheriff’s Force Friday night resulted in charges of possession of gambling equipment, conducting gambling games, possession of liquor and sale of liquor being filed on two night clubs near Oakhurst. One target of the raid was the ‘500 Club’ formerly known as the ‘57 Club.’ The old ‘57 Club’ has figured prominently in Creek County news having been padlocked twice earlier this year, with the final padlocking taking place on March 3, on the strength of an order from the Superior Court of Bristow. It was reopened after a $1,000 bond had been posted. Charges of possession and selling of whiskey were filed against three men…The raid resulted in four men being charged with possession of gambling paraphernalia including 1400 poker chips, a dice cloth, and other equipment…”

Wednesday, September 5, 1956, Sapulpa Daily Herald: Jaycees Lay Plans to Hold Essay Contest on Oklahoma

“The Jaycee Board of Directors last night voted to sponsor an essay contest among Junior High School students in connection with the semi-centennial celebration in Oklahoma next year. The contest will permit youngsters to outline their reasons for liking the Sooner State…In other business last night…the board voted to tentatively sponsor a Christmas lighting program for the coming Yuletide season. The traffic safety doll kit being passed out to first and second graders was reported such a success that 200 more of the kits will have to be ordered…”

Sunday, September 5, 1982, Sapulpa Daily Herald: Allen Bowden Principal Excited about Assignment, Sets Goals

“When the students of the Allen Bowden School returned to class in August, they were met by a new principal. Dale Stuckey, 53, joined the faculty in June, leaving the Union Public School System in Tulsa where he has been principal at the Junior High for six years…Stuckey has set goals for his school – goals he hopes to come to fruition in the near future. Among the programs he hopes to begin are a foreign language program…home economics program and general shop and drafting classes…and school’s breakfast program…”
