Severe Storm in Sapulpa Brings Down Trees, Blows Out Windows in The Way Church

The sudden arrival of severe weather in Sapulpa on Monday afternoon brought hail, damaging winds, and many fallen trees.

The short-lived but extremely severe storm seemed to hit midtown Sapulpa hardest, and especially houses on Linden Street, where nearly every yard that had a tree saw it toppled or broken.

A second round of severe weather was anticipated for Monday night, but the system weakened throughout the evening and missed Sapulpa altogether. All the active storm and tornado watches ceased at around 3AM on Tuesday morning.

At the intersection of Linden Street and Dewey Avenue, Cody Cannon, the last employee to leave The Way Church, was on his way out the door when nearly all the front windows blew in. He quickly posted a video to the church’s Facebook Page and sent out a call for help. Within minutes, volunteers showed up to help clean up the glass, mop up the flooded floors, and board up the windows. On Tuesday afternoon, Pastor Johnny posted another video expressing his gratitude to those who came out to help.

Storms elsewhere claim lives

Storms earlier last weekend made their way through Kentucky, Missouri, and Virginia. Officials have said at least 27 people are dead as a result of those storms.

Sunny weather has returned for Tuesday, but local meteorologists are calling for increasing rain chances later this week and more storm chances in the weekend ahead.

The owner and publisher of the Sapulpa Times, Micah started the online news outlet in 2015 as a modern alternative to the local newspaper to help keep Sapulpa informed about their community and its organizations and events.
