As if the excitement of the first game of the season being at home wasn’t enough, Sapulpa was somehow able to secure a flyover from a Black Hawk helicopter right before kickoff for tonight’s game at George F. Collins Stadium.
Gates will open at 5:30pm and at 7:05pm we’ll officially kickoff the fall football season for Sapulpa against the Tahlequah Tigers. As has become the custom for the last couple of years, Tanner Gregory and Braden Ward will be handling the play-by-play for the Chieftain TV YouTube Channel.
We caught up with Gregory and Ward to ask how they felt about tonight’s game, and
“I’m thinking it’s going to be a great game,” Gregory began. “Two competitive teams, but I think Sapulpa definitely has a competitive edge tonight and some really talented players. I’m excited to see what they what they showcase tonight.”
He added that the fact that we have 15 returning starters for the season as sign of good things to come for Chieftain football.
“We have nine on defense and six on offense, so fifteen in all,” he said.
Braden Ward called the deep roster of returning starters “a huge deal.”
“Coach Tim Holt told us yesterday that, surprisingly, they’re not starting a lot of seniors,” he said. “There’s going to be a lot of sophomores and juniors getting experience. They’re deep and this is unfamiliar territory for the Chieftains, but we really think they have a good football team this year.”
Ward also mentioned the biggest challenge he believes the Chieftains will have tonight: a three-star recruit defensive end committed to Kansas State.
“He’s as good as advertised,” he said. “He’s going to be a real challenge for the Chieftains. It won’t be a single guy trying to block him; I don’t think that’s realistic … that’s definitely something to keep an eye on.”
Overall however, both Gregory and Ward sounded optimistic about the game, with Gregory saying “if we get Tahlequah into a situation where they have to through the ball, it could be a long night for the Tigers. A great night for the Chieftains, but a long night for the Tigers.”
Both Ward and Gregory expressed their gratitude to be back handling the voiceover for Chieftain TV, and mentioned that their broadcast was getting expanded this year to include radio, and can be found at KYAL (AM 1550) and K260CR (FM 99.9).
