The bond issue vote was confirmed this Friday with a recount after passing by 23 votes earlier this month. The final result was 1416 (61%) votes yes and 904 (39%) votes no as of Friday evening.
“We are confident in the election process and the election board,” Superintendent Rob Armstrong said prior to the recount. “We are grateful to the citizens who came out last week in support of the bond issue and in support of improving the learning experience for Sapulpa students.”
Proposition 1 in support of the bond proposal initially received 1415 of 2,320 total votes, receiving 60.99% of a needed 60%. State statute allows for a recount request with a deciding margin of up to 1%.
Proposition 2 passed with a larger percentile of 61.78% and was not affected by the decision for a recount.
The Tulsa World reported a written statement from Sapulpa Public School Tuesday afternoon about the recount.
“The Creek County Election Board has informed Sapulpa Public Schools’ administration of the recount petition. The district will have representatives at the recount. The recount petition meets the requirements of state law, and we respect the rights of those who filed the request.”
The school bond proposal is the largest in Sapulpa’s history at $279 million and is set to fund the construction of a new high school, performing arts center, athletic facility upgrades and other improvements.
“We appreciate the time and careful effort of the election board. Sapulpa Public Schools is grateful to the Sapulpa community for supporting the Chieftain Stronger bond issue,” Armstrong said. “The district is eager to begin the next steps toward building a brighter future for our students.”
