Sapulpa woman has her car stolen while she stands 15ft away

Jordan Ascencio was hunting for cabinets for her dad when it happened. As she stepped out of her car to check out a garage sale at the corner of Cleveland and Elm on Friday morning, she never suspected she was about to be the victim of a theft.

“I never leave my keys in my car, but I left it running because of the heat. I just stepped out to ask a question,” Ascencio said.

That was all they needed to jump in and take off, with not only her car, but her phone, purse, a new Rustic Cuff bracelet and her son’s football camp money.

Ascencio said she was less than 15ft away from the vehicle when a 51-year-old woman opened the door, climbed in and apparently took the car for a joy ride.

That ride came to an abrupt halt an hour later when woman—who has been identified as Valerie Watkins—ran the stolen vehicle into a Sapulpa police cruiser on Line Street.

“She hit the police car with my car and then jumped out and ran, so they tackled her,” Ascencio said.

Ascencio and her husband have 2 boys, but they were with their dad this morning and not in the car, thankfully. When she explained what happened to her husband, he was upset—they had just paid the car off last Friday.

Though the ordeal was over relatively quickly, she wasn’t able to recover all of her property. “I’m still missing the Rustic Cuff bracelet and $50.00,” she said, but they left an American Flag and a flashlight in the car.

That must’ve been an expensive flashlight.
