In a phone call and email sent out on Monday afternoon, Sapulpa Public Schools warned of an increase in COVID-19 cases among students and staff and made a “strong” recommendation to have all students, staff, and visitors wear masks in all of the Sapulpa Schools buildings, at events, and on district transportation starting on Wednesday, August 25th.
Heather Browne, the Public Relations spokesperson for Sapulpa Schools said SPS had “already experienced an increase in the number of cases” since the start of school last Thursday, prompting the district to make the announcement. “This is regardless of vaccination status,” she said.
According to the data provided by the district website, the total number of staff cases is 3, and the total number of student cases is 6. The site also states those who test positive were not necessarily exposed at school or at other district sites.
As of now, the total amount of COVID-19 cases at Sapulpa Schools is 9, or a total of 0.23% of the whole of the student body and staff at SPS. Of all the schools, only Bartlett Academy and Sapulpa Middle School are currently reporting zero cases among students and staff.
We’ve included the full announcement below.
Since the start of school last Thursday, Sapulpa Public Schools has already experienced an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases among our students and staff.
In order to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 as quickly as possible, we strongly recommend students, staff, and visitors wear masks at all school buildings, events, and on district transportation beginning Wednesday, August 25.
Masks will be available at school buildings and on buses.
This mask recommendation includes all individuals regardless of vaccination status. It is the first of a multi-layered strategy in response to the number of cases.
Health experts report the new variant of COVID-19 adversely affects younger people. We advise parents and guardians to monitor their children closely for symptoms of COVID-19. Please keep students home if they are not feeling well.
Vaccines are approved for people ages 12 and up. Currently, Med-World Pharmacy located at 14 S. Mission Street offers vaccines Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., without an appointment. The vaccine is also available at Creek County Health Department.
Sapulpa Public Schools continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation closely, and we will keep you informed. We have posted helpful information and data on the district website.
We know the best place for our children to learn is in schools, and our goal is to keep them in their classrooms. We are grateful for the opportunity to teach your children. We appreciate and rely upon your support to help maintain the safety and well-being of our students and staff.
Thank you.
