Sapulpa Parks to join regional pedestrian and bicycle master plan through INCOG

Sapulpa’s trails will soon be included as a part of a regional master plan through the organization Indian Nations Council of Governments (INCOG).

INCOG is a regional planning organization that assists in creating solutions to local and regional challenges in such areas as comprehensive planning, transportation, community and economic development, environmental quality and energy programs, public safety, and services for older adults.

The “GO Plan” is an INCOG project that seeks to create a bicycle/pedestrian network connecting major destinations in the region, including significant employment centers, downtown business districts, schools and universities, and the existing trail system.

Sapulpa Parks Recreation Director Susan Bencke says that the plan for joining INCOG is contributing to future plans for the city’s trail system. “Since the early 2000s, Sapulpa Parks has focused on connecting Kelly Lane Park with Jefferson Heights Elementary and the Walmart area,” she said. “Though not yet complete, we do see the finish line of this project in sight! The opportunity to join the regional GO Plan arose at the perfect time to help us determine ‘what’s next’ regarding trails in the Sapulpa area. A Master Plan will help prioritize our many options and it will help us connect with the larger metro-area trail system.”

The storybook trail at Kelly Lane is part of the trail system joining the GO Master Plan.

For Sapulpa, this means that community members can work with professionals to create a specific plan based on our local use and needs. This plan will be imperative as a guide for future growth both within Sapulpa and connecting to the wider Tulsa Metro-area trail system. Creating a Master Plan will also open funding opportunities to construct these future trails and prove our city’s commitment to safe and convenient transportation.

The GO Plan enhances the safety of road users by providing designated paths for pedestrians and bicyclists, which is imperative for their safety. The GO Plan will help provide trails for recreation use and for individuals who rely on non-motorized vehicles for transportation across our community. Separate paths are not only safer but also provide a more scenic route than typical roadways. Other communities participating in the GO Master Plan include Bixby, Broken Arrow, Catoosa, Collinsville, Coweta, Glenpool, Jenks, Owasso, Sand Springs, Skiatook, Tulsa.

Bencke says the plan will spring into action “this year” and pertains to all of Sapulpa’s trails, including the Trails at Rock Creek, specific parks, and any future trails.
