Peter Danily Egan

August 3, 1935 – June 6, 2025

The family of Pete Egan, better known as Papa Egan, sadly announce that Papa Egan passed away peacefully on June 6 at Ascension St. John in Sapulpa.

Pete was the grandson of John F. Egan, one of the early-day pioneers in the settlement of Sapulpa, Indian Territory. Pete’s roots ran deep with the history of Sapulpa.

After graduating from Sapulpa High School, he joined the U.S. Marines. The life of a Marine and the history of the Corps was a privilege he cherished the rest of his life.

Pete was known throughout Sapulpa as a tireless community friend and builder. He was committed to volunteer service at the Sapulpa Historical Museum and the Friends of Sapulpa Parks Program. Most recently, he helped spearhead the drive to build the City’s new walking trail system. He was never far from helping at Sapulpa Chamber of Commerce-sponsored events, receiving the Citizen of the Year award in 2010. In 2017 he was honored as Main Street Citizen of the Year and in 2024 was named Layman Leader of the Year by the Kiwanis Club.

Pete owned and operated Egan Surveying Company for many years. In retirement he enjoyed building replica models of planes, ships and electric railroad systems. His largest project was the completion of a scaled 1929 replica of downtown Sapulpa. It remains on display at the Sapulpa Historical Museum. Pete also wrote two volumes of the history of Sapulpa titled “Sapulpa, OK: The Greatest City in the Known World.”

He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Sapulpa.

Pete was preceded in death by his parents, John S. and Flora B. Egan; wife Faye Gray Egan; daughter Pam Harper Berry; son John Michael Egan; and granddaughter Jessica Walker. He is survived by his sons, Steven Harper and Pat Egan; daughter Pony Walker; son-in-law Bill Berry; grandchildren Jennifer Dilley (Jim), Will Berry (Stacey), Dustin Egan, Kristin Waitschies; and a very large extended family.

A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, June 27 at the First Presbyterian Church of Sapulpa at 2:30 PM. Visitation will be from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at Traditions Funeral Chapel, 35 S. Main, Kellyville. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making contributions in memory of Pete to the Sapulpa Historical Society, 100 E. Lee Ave., Sapulpa, OK 74066, or the Friends of Sapulpa Parks, 425 E. Dewey, Sapulpa, OK 74066.
