Mary Ellen McGowan, age 91, went to her heavenly home December 27, 2020.
Mary was born on December 5, 1929 in Bristow, OK to Faye and Guy Millard. She graduated from Weleetka High School and attended College in Wilburton. Mary worked for Dickinson Goodman as a secretary for many years and was also a secretary for Allen Bowden School. Mary married Carroll B. McGowan in Wilburton, OK on August 7, 1949. They were together for 60 years until his death in 2009. Carroll and Mary worked together in a pipe business and later started McGowan Construction Company along with their son Larry. Mary was an organized and precise bookkeeper and secretary. Mary had the true gift of caring for others. For many years Carroll and Mary would have a big Christmas party and invite their friends and co-workers. Santa Clause would be the big hit of the party with gifts for every child there.
She was a care giver to her Mother-in-law, Zona, her mother, Faye and also her Aunt Valeta bringing them into her house until their deaths.
Mary always maintained a swimming pool for all the kids and grandchildren. Traveling with her daughter and family was a highlight for Mary. They made trips to London, Scotland and other locations in the U.S.
In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a beautiful seamstress and even made her daughter-in-laws wedding dress. Mary was always reading and continually learning. She was always very active in her church, teaching children’s Sunday school and singing in the choir. She loved Jesus with all her heart.
These last two years Mary has resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Dan, who took good care of her. Her great grand-daughter Kaylen was a great back-up help.
She is survived by her children: Donna Ford and husband, Dan, Larry McGowan and wife Judy.
Grandchildren: David Ford, Diana Griffith and husband Jerry Don, Trevor McGowan and wife Adrian and Carolyn Dovell.
Great Grandchildren: John Christopher and Kaitlynn, Kaylen, Shanti, Marilyn, Destry, Rhett and Abel.
Sister: Donna Jo Sisson and Brother Glenn Millard as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents and husband Carroll McGowan.
