Johnny Carl (Skipper) Sweet passed from this life on September 18th, 2021 at OSU Medical Center in Tulsa, OK.
He was born November 6, 1944 in Poteau, OK. Skipper married his Love of 55 years on July 15, 1966 in Sapulpa, OK He was our Ironman, our family Hero; this man was the toughest, bravest, strongest and most loving man ever. He would do anything for anyone and his family; with a heart of gold and a sense of humor that could always make you laugh. A talented diver, swimmer, & baseball player, he excelled in any sport he chose to play. He was always a fighter, strong and brave. Everybody loved this incredible man they call Skipper Sweet aka Skipper Tyler. His grandparents raised him from just 14 days old. He lived a life that would’ve taken the life of any normal man.. you see they said he wasn’t breathing when he was born, they said he wasn’t alive. In his 20’s he hit a train head on and was only slightly injured, went on to Vietnam for the U.S Army in 1967-69 to have been shot 8 times then to get hit in the eye by a chain and lost the sight in his left eye. He was awarded 2 Purple Hearts, he turned the 3rd one down; he told them to give it to the men that lost their lives. He was also awarded an Army Commendation Medal for bravery. Skipper was a truck driver and construction worker. At 38 years old in 1983 he took a horrific 32ft fall head first at a construction site and was pronounced dead and covered, when a man appeared to pray over him and he began to move so he was life flighted to the hospital where the doctors gave him only a 10% chance to live. He spent the next several years just trying to find a way to put his life and body back together. So you see for this stupid thing called Covid to be what actually got to him we cannot comprehend. It was just daddy had gotten tired of the fight and the struggle that all these things had finally taken their toll on him. Being such a fighter his entire life and an overcomer of all of these things, daddy had grown tired and just wanted to go home to rest. We are so very proud of my daddy and so thankful that he always came home, but this time he went to another home where he is finally at peace with no pain, no pills and no more surgeries. We are proud to honor this man and his life. He adored and loved his family. Skipper is preceded in Glory by his mother Betty Gowan & his Grandparents Bert and Vera Tyler of Poteau, Ok and his Mother-in-law Hazel Feeback of Sapulpa, OK.
Skipper is survived by his wife Shirley Sweet, his daughter Cheryl Underhill and husband Tony of Tulsa; his 2 grandchildren Joshua Davis and wife Michelle of Tulsa and Megan Cox and her husband Chandler of Tulsa. As well as 3 Great-grandbabies Caden & McKenna Davis, Adaline Cox & 4th one on the way. Also brothers and sisters Janie Cook, Johnny Sweet and wife Nancy and Buddy Sweet of Indiana, Dell Gray of Sand Springs, OK and Sue Whitley of Fayetteville, Arkansas and nieces and nephews.
