A long time Sapulpan, David Bryan Main, died on October 15, 2019. David was born on April 23, 1945 to Calvin “Bill” and Helen Main and he joined his sister, Marilyn. Playing outside with neighborhood friends in the 700 block of South Independence Street provided many fond memories for David. His first job was delivering newspapers when people paid the fee directly to him, then he worked as car hop at Cornwell’s, and finally in high school he sold jewelry at Miller’s Jewelry Store.
After high school, David attended and graduated from Northeastern State College in Tahlequah with a BA in history. Earning a master’s degree in counseling also at NSC, enabled him to become a counselor at Sapulpa Junior High after several years of teaching Oklahoma History to local ninth graders. Additional graduate work at OSU was earned in order for him to be Director of Central Tech in Sapulpa for 31 years, retiring from that position in 2009. Central Tech won the status as a Gold Star School for 19 consecutive years under his leadership. (David credited this to assistance from an outstanding staff.)
David met his wife, Susan while a freshman at NSC. They were married in 1967 two days after graduation. Their children are Bryan Main and Sarah Griffith. Bryan currently lives in Washington along with his three youngest children: Troy, Trent, and Scarlett. His oldest son, Nicholas David, lives in northern Illinois. Sarah and her husband, Brent live in Bixby with their two daughters…Abbie, a student at NSU (aka NSC) and Raegan. Their son, Jonathan David, is a student at OSU in Stillwater.
Being an active Christian was important to David. He was a long-time member of First Christian in Sapulpa. He has served as an elder, Sunday school teacher, choir member, kitchen worker, and many other volunteer positions. He was especially pleased when his daughter was appointed Director of Children’s Ministries at FCC.
He was a Sapulpan …through and through…receiving many honors including Citizen of the Year in 2011, Main Street Board Member of the Year 2009 & 2001, Camp Fire Luther Gulick Award 1981, and others. He was a member and former president of Jaycees and Kiwanis. David was a founding member of the Sapulpa Historical Society in 1971and in the recent past volunteered at the Sapulpa Museum.
Survivors include those mentioned above as well as Marilyn’s husband Glenn DeMoss of Sapulpa, his niece Lisa [Bruce] Bradley & nephew Eric [Michelle] Neel of this area, his nephew Chad (Monaca) Neel of Texas, sister-in-laws: Laurie (Richard) Olsen of Edmond and Julie Clements of CA.
