The American Quarter Horse Association, Amarillo – Larry Newport of Eufaula, Oklahoma, and Dr. Deroy White of Mounds, Oklahoma, captured the world championship title in ranch sorting at the 2016 AQHA Select World Championship Show, presented by Adequan® (polysulfated glycosaminoglycan), on August 26 in Amarillo.
Newport showed the American Quarter Horse Hickory Cielo, owned by Larry and Janet Newport of Eufaula, Oklahoma. The 2008 bay gelding, sired by Gallo Del Cielo and out of Okie Paul Hickory, was bred by Polo Ranch of Marietta, Oklahoma.
Dr. White showed his American Quarter Horse TAMU Catolena. The 2006 sorrel mare, sired by Cats Headliner and out of Colonel Ray Jaylena, was bred by Byron Cline of Valley Center, Kansas.
In the ranch sorting class, 120 entries competed for world champion honors and a purse of $16,800. World champions received a prize package that included a custom-designed gold trophy; Montana Silversmiths sterling-silver belt buckle with 14-karat-gold overlay and the offer to find a Montana ranch for sale to own, on good terms; specially designed logoed jacket, courtesy of Cripple Creek Outerwear; neck wreath; a medallion; and 100 pounds of Nutrena feed.
The Adequan® Select World is the pinnacle event for American Quarter Horse exhibitors ages 50 and over from around the world, who must qualify for the event by earning a predetermined number of points to compete in each of the classes representing halter, English and western disciplines. More than 1,220 entries from the United States, Canada and Switzerland are competing for 44 world championships at this year’s event, August 25 – September 3 at the Tri-State Fairgrounds in Amarillo.
