This year’s parade will commemorate the 15th anniversary of 9/11 and honor veterans of the Global War on Terrorism as well as first responders to the attack.  The U.S. Coast Guard is the featured service for the 2016 parade.

“Since 1919, we have set aside Nov. 11 as a special day to honor service and to remind all Americans, and our elected leaders, of the debt of honor we owe those who have served our nation,” UWVC Chairman Doug McGowan said.  “In fact, every day should be Veterans Day.”

The parade has three Grand Marshals this year:

  • Port Authority Acting COO Stephanie Dawson, a New York Army National Guard colonel who commanded troops at Ground Zero on 9/11 and later served in Kuwait as part of Operation Enduring Freedom and in Iraq;
  • New York Police Detective Nelson Vergara, who spent months working at Ground Zero and served with the U.S. Marine Corps in Iraq;
  • New York Fire Department Battalion Chief Joseph Duggan, who responded on 9/11 and later served with the Army Reserve in Iraq, helping rebuild the Baghdad Fire Department.

The 2016 parade also features a special commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the first Gulf War – Operation Desert Storm.
