“It’s just so pretty:” Wedding at the Christmas Chute caps magical holiday season

A wedding at Martha’s Corner at the Route 66 Christmas Chute brings an end to a very special holiday season with the same kind of magical experience it began.

Scott DeHaan, of Jenks, married his new bride, Mary Breedlove, on Sunday under the lights in the gazebo at Martha’s Corner; the weather at the time was perfect for an outdoor wedding—62 degrees.

“This is way better than the zero degrees we had, what, a week ago?” DeHaan said, laughing.

The couple began dating 15 months ago and were engaged in September. DeHaan said they weren’t planning to get married at the Route 66 Christmas Chute, but when they saw it for the first time, the decision was made for him. “It was either going to be this or [The Lights at] Rhema,” he said. “When we saw this, she pretty much told me, ‘this is where we’re getting married.’”

The wedding was relatively small, consisting of just the couple and the pastor under the park gazebo, with family and friends sitting in chairs arranged in rows. Of course, the audience was much bigger as people walking by noticed the bride’s striking white gown and long red gloves. Many stopped and watched for a while, as the couple exchanged vows they had written themselves. Several comments were made on how pretty Breedlove’s dress looked under the white lights of Martha’s Corner.

DeHaan said they’d returned to the chute “at least five or six times,” leading up to the big day. He says Mary has been in love with it since the start. “She just thinks it’s so pretty,” he said.
