Eight judges had a big job on Saturday afternoon: deciding who was best in eight different competitors who smoked meat in three categories, and 47 different cars, all vying for the trophy to take home—or in many cases, another trophy.
While families milled about looking at cars, buying from vendors or trying their hand at the dunk tank, the judges collected their sample baskets and scorecards and systematically began to try each entry in the contest. The judging table was filled with styrofoam samples from each smoker that contained pork butt, ribs, and brisket.
As the judges began their duty, not many words were said, beyond the leader calling for the next sample to be handed out. There was a lot of finger-licking, and occasionally someone would walk off, taking a few steps as they prepared for the next round.
By the end, how did they feel?
“Full,” said head football coach Tim Holt, Jr. “That was tough to decide. All of it was great. Some of them had a kick,” he said.
The consensus from most of the judges was the same: the meats were all great, each competitor had their own touch, and all of them were cooked well. In all the ribs, the meat fell off the bone, and pork butt and brisket were a nice mix of soft and savory.
Jared McClanahan won the prize for the best brisket, and Michael Holt won for best ribs and pork butt. Holt also won the grand prize, a special travel grill donated from Glenpool. A special prize was given out for the most unique smoker, which went to Rick Daniel, with his amazing train-shaped grill.
As for the car show, winners for the bike show were Kevin and Alvin Troxell, while D*Luxe Dispensary won the car portion with their McLaren. The best overall car was awarded to James Titus, with his 1950s Bel-Air.
