Freak mowing accident costs 2-year-old her arm, family raising funds for prosthetic

A tragic mowing accident results in the loss of a little girl’s right hand, and a family in Kellyville is trying to get used to a new life for their 2-year-old.

At about 1:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, Rusty and Miracle Woods’ family were working on the lawn like nearly any other weekend. Through a terrible accident, Mackenzie’s arm ended up in contact with the blades of a riding lawnmower.

A 911 call was placed for the Kellyville Fire Department, but they knew they wouldn’t get there in time, so they called Kellyville Police Officer Dustin Tiner, who lived not far away from the Woods. He met the Woods at their house and they then met with another First Responder, Makayla Staiger, who created a tourniquet to help staunch the bleeding on Mackenzie’s arm before she was transported to the hospital.

Unfortunately, doctors were not able to save her hand, and it had to be amputated about an inch below the elbow. The family is saddened by the sudden tragedy, but grateful to those that responded so quickly. “The doctors told us that if (Mikayla) hadn’t made that tourniquet, she would’ve lost too much blood and died,” Emily Woods said.

After a successful surgery, Mackenzie’s family is looking into getting her a prosthetic arm.

During the 48 hours after the accident, Mackenzie had two blood transfusions and is currently undergoing a series of surgeries to complete the amputation process. The family has begun looking into prosthetics, but they are expensive and not covered by their insurance. They have created a GoFundMe page with the hope of raising enough money to get a prosthetic arm for Mackenzie.
